Undergraduate StudyWe offer a very wide range of undergraduate programmes, each with considerable flexibility in module selection, is supplemented by options that allow even wider choice both within and outside the School. All these programmes are based on research-led teaching and are structured to offer growing disciplinary expertise within a framework that brings out the skills of communication, analysis, information handling and interpretation of evidence which make students of these subjects both desirable employees and informed and critical citizens. Our teaching is characterised by strong tutorial support and carefully planned programmes to develop skills and understanding to allow students to take increasing responsibility for their learning in more specialised seminar-based modules, linked to staff research expertise. We use diverse methods of assessment to support emphasis on presentation, teamwork and projects/dissertations, as well as essay-writing and exams, and there are opportunities for work experience and study abroad (studying in Arabic, English, French, German, Spanish). Six languages are taught within the School (Arabic, Ancient Greek, Biblical Hebrew, Kurdish, Latin and Persian), with the latest technology (including Web-CT) used in support of intensive class instruction. Each degree programme is supervised by a Board of Study, and as we run numerous Combined Honours programmes we are experienced in ensuring that students on these programmes are taught and supported with the same care and success as those on Single Honours Programmes. 'Programme specifications' and 'module descriptions'Undergraduate study programmes at the University of Exeter are formally defined via programme specifications, which define degree programmes, e.g. BA History & Society, and module descriptions, which define the individual modules, e.g. 'History of the British Labour Party', from which degree programmes are made up. Note that these are the documents which our students and staff currently use, so you can see exactly what is being taught and how, but you should note that they are constantly modified and updated. Equally, as we link all module provision closely to staff research expertise, not all modules will necessarily be offered in a particular period, as they depend on individual staff availability. |
