Professor of Sociology

My research interests lie in the sociology of religion, with a particular emphasis on patterns of religion in Europe. I am also interested in the new theoretical paradigms that are emerging in the field – not least the notion of ‘multiple modernities’. I am happy to consider supervision in most areas of the sociology of religion.

My work fits closely with the emphasis on culture in the Department of Sociology and Philosophy at Exeter. I also contribute to the growing expertise on different aspects of religion across the University - notably in the Department of Theology and in the Institute for Arab and Islamic Studies. I am a member of the Advisory Board of the Centre for European Studies.
