ESRC 1+3 open competition
This competition has now closed
The Economic Social Research Council (ESRC) has adopted a quota method for allocating the majority of their awards. However, there are about 100 awards available through the open competition.
Competition for these awards is intense and the applications have to be made through the School. We operate a vetting procedure and each Department will select one applicant to put forward to the open competition.
We have lots of experience of helping our students with successful applications and are happy to provide advice and guidance to the short-listed candidates. This will include advice from academic and other staff on a one-to-one basis.
Students registering in the following units will be eligible to apply to the ESRC open competition:
- Department of Politics
- Department of Sociology and Philosophy
- ESRC Centre for Genomics in Society
- Institute of Arab and Islamic Studies
- Department of History
- School of Law
Eligibility
The ESRC provides detailed guidance on eligibility on its website.
These awards are open to students studying at both the Streatham Campus, Exeter, and Cornwall Campus and are available for UK/EU students. EU students only receive fees (unless they have been resident in the UK for at least 3 years). Otherwise the awards cover fees and maintenance. The 1 + 3 awards combine 1 year of MSc training with 3 years' PhD funding.
To apply
- Applicants must complete the ESRC Open Competition expression of interest form and send it to Liz Hull, no later than 24 February 2010.
- As for all of our awards, you must also apply for postgraduate study at the university via the normal university application form.
