AHRC PhD studentships
We are delighted to announce that the University of Exeter has been awarded a Block Grant Partnership from the Arts and Humanities Research Council (AHRC) which will provide our departments with 47 awards over five years. This year we will be offering 9 doctoral awards as follows:
- 1 in Archaeology
- 2 in Classics and Ancient History
- 3 in History
- 1 in Middle Eastern and African Language and Culture
- 1 in Philosophy
- 1 Religious Studies (Theology)
Eligibility
The Doctoral Awards Scheme provides support for students undertaking doctoral study. Students should apply through this scheme even if their initial registration is as a probationary student or as an MPhil student. The main criteria are:
- Residence - Awards are restricted to students meeting Home/EU residency criteria. UK nationals resident in the UK are normally eligible for a full award (EU nationals resident in the UK for the previous three years may also be eligible). EU nationals resident in the EEA (wider than EU) are usually eligible for a fees-only award. Overseas applicants are normally not eligible.
- Academic - You will be expected to have achieved a 2:1 honours degree. For PhD study, successful completion of a Masters is expected in addition. Candidates with overseas qualifications should check that their qualification meets the AHRC expected standard.
- Subject - Your topic must be within the subject areas covered by the AHRC. Some postgraduate programmes may span across AHRC subject areas, in which case all subject areas should be listed on the form, to allow the application to be fully considered.
Before submitting your application please check the AHRC student funding eligibility guide to confirm you meet the academic and residency criteria.
To apply
- You need to complete the Application form for AHRC funding: doctoral programmes (word doc) and submit it to Liz Hull by Friday 12 March 2010. By completing this form you will automatically be considered for the Humanities and Social Sciences Masters full fee bursaries, so you do not need to complete the separate form for that competition.
- As for all of our awards, you must apply for postgraduate study at the University via the normal university application form. Please make sure your application includes two academic references. You must have applied to the University and have submitted all your supporting documents by Friday 12 March 2010 to be eligible, so please submit your application form as soon as possible.
Current PhD/MPhil students who wish to apply for an award starting in their second or third year should only complete the Application form for AHRC funding: doctoral programmes and submit it by the deadline.
Selection process
All shortlisted applicants will be invited for an interview and will be required to give a short presentation. We will be organising a series of activities for potential applicants on the interview days including research workshops, campus tours and a lunch with academics and current students.
The planned timeline for short-listing and interviews is as follows:
| Date | Procedure |
|---|---|
| Week commencing 29 March 2010 | Shortlisting takes place |
| Week commencing 5 April 2010 | Shortlisted candidates informed |
| 26 - 30 April 2010 | Interviews at Streatham Campus, Exeter, and Cornwall Campus |
