Integration and Difference: Crossing Boundaries?

School of Humanities and Social Sciences Annual Postgraduate Conference

18 and 19 May 2010, University of Exeter

Keynote address by Martin Bell OBE

Roundtable by Professor Regenia Gagnier
(Panel: Dr Dario Castiglione, Christopher Fear, Dr Edward Skidelski, Dr. Gisa Weszkalnys)

This two-day conference aims to bring together a range of disciplinary approaches to ‘integration’ and ‘difference’, questioning whether the two concepts are mutually exclusive. Is full integration ever truly possible? Are boundaries designed to be crossed, or should they be respected? What does disciplinarity have to offer? Ultimately, the conference will explore the issue of interdisciplinarity and the breaking down of traditional boundaries between academic fields.

Due to the recent election, Lord Ashdown was unable to make it to the HuSS Post-Graduate Conference. However, he was kind enough to send us a copy of the speech he gave at the Tim Garden Memorial Lecture, Chatham House, in June last year. He talks about the interdependent world and important current affairs topics, both of which were part of the focus for this conference, so we have included the full text of Lord Ashdown's speech as a downloadable PDF.
