Postgraduate events

We hold a number of events throughout the year where you will have the opportunity to find out about the latest research and share your ideas.

Research seminars

Each department and many of the specialist centres organises its own research seminar series. These are usually organised by academic staff and consist of a presentation by a visiting speaker, with time for questions and informal discussions over refreshments. You are strongly encouraged to attend a wide range of these seminars. They offer an invaluable opportunity to listen to and meet academics and professional practitioners who are specialists in their fields. Find out more about our research seminars.

Student events

The Graduate School is keen to support student-led events, such as symposia, training initiatives, journals, seminars and reading groups. We can book rooms, set up mailing lists, help with creating webpages and provide general help and guidance. Research students are also encouraged to attend and present papers to seminars, conferences and symposia outside the University.

Annual Postgraduate Students' Conference

The School of Humanities and Social Sciences holds an annual research conference for students. Organised by students, it provide an opportunity for students from all disciplines in the School to present papers based on their research to fellow students and staff. This is an invaluable opportunity to practise your presentation skills and to discuss your work. In addition to academic papers, there are also panels giving advice on how to get articles published and how to get academic jobs. After the conference there is a chance to socialise at the conference dinner. Attendance at the research conference is obligatory and all research students should give at least one paper before they receive their degree. This year’s theme is ‘Integration and Difference: Crossing Boundaries?’ For more information visit the conference website.

HuSS Postgraduate Research Symposium

This year the Graduate School is organising a week of events aimed at both campus and off-campus students. It has been especially designed to provide an opportunity for students who are not generally on-campus to interact with the HuSS research community. A number of events will take place enabling students to take part in various research and skills training sessions, participate in workshops and talks from past students and current academics as well as giving students the opportunity to network and socialise. For more information visit the HuSS Postgraduate Research Symposium website.
