My research focuses on the history of sexuality. I am interested in intimacy within marriage during the twentieth century, and have published widely on changing birth control practices. I am in the process of completing a book on individual understandings and experiences of sexual intimacy within marriage of those born early in the twentieth century.

I am also collaborating with Dr Rebecca Langlands (Department of Classics & Ancient History) on an interdisciplinary study, Sexual Knowledge, Sexual History, of the way that both popular and academic ideas about sex and sexuality have been articulated from the 18th century to the present day with reference to erotic material from ancient civilisations. Our most recent work has focused on the sexually explicit frescoes from Pompeii and the way tourists have responded to them over the centuries.
