The Eighth International Mining History Congress will be held in Redruth, at the centre of the once large and highly influential copper and tin mining industry of Cornwall and West Devon. From here labour and mining expertise was exported to the world, and much of the surviving landscape has recently been accorded UNESCO World Heritage status.

This Congress follows on previous meetings, the first of which was held in Australia in 1985, then Germany in 1989, the United States in 1994, Mexico in 1998, Greece in 2000, Japan in 2003, and India in 2007.

The meeting will start with a plenary session on the evening of Friday, 12th June, and will conclude at lunchtime on Monday, 15th June, with continuous paper sessions on Saturday and Sunday, 13th and 14th June. Pre-sessional events will include field trips to mining and related sites across Cornwall and west Devon and arrangements will be made to conduct delegates to another conference, organised by the British National Association Of Mining History Organisations in Matlock, Derbyshire the following weekend, 19th to 21st June.

An integral part of this year's Congress will be the inclusion of early-career researchers in mining history. It is hoped that this will provide a formal platform for the transfer of knowledge and expertise and to integrate the new generation of mining historians more fully into research networks of established scholars in the field. Partners of registered delegates wishing to attend congress will be charged a reduced conference fee of £60.00.

Please note that hundreds of people are expected to visit Redruth on Saturday 13 June 2009 for the annual Murdoch Day celebrations. Participants are advised to make their hotel reservation as soon as possible as accommodation and restuarants in the town and surrounding area often become fully booked for this date weeks in advance.

The Congress will take place in the conference rooms at the Penventon Park Hotel , Redruth, Cornwall.
Overnight accommodation must be booked directly with the Hotel and not through the conference organisers. Please contact the hotel as soon as possible to make your room reservation.

Post-sessional Tour. Roger Burt intends to lead a party (using their own transport) from Cornwall to Matlock, Derbyshire for the NAMHO Conference. All travel, accommodation, food and entry fees to be paid by those following the post-sessional itinerary. It may be possible for those without transport to travel with others who have their own cars. Delegates who wish to take part in this tour will need to contact Roger (r.burt@exeter.ac.uk) by 1st April 2009.
