The Department of Classics and Ancient History at Exeter is one of the largest and most successful in the country, with 18 members of staff (16 of them in permanent positions) and nearly 300 students. Research in Classics and Ancient History is rated as third best among UK universities when comparing the highest standard of world leading research. The department takes an interdisciplinary perspective, and its members have close links to related fields including history, archaeology, philosophy, visual arts, and linguistics. Classics and Ancient History is home to a number of projects and research centres: The Centre for Hellenistic and Romano-Greek Culture and Society (run by Prof. Stephen Mitchell and supported by a £1.25m grant from the Leverhulme Trust), the Black Sea Project (run by Prof David Braund), and The Centre for Mediterreranean Studies (run by Dr Lynette Mitchell). The Department holds at least one major international conference each year. Recent subjects have included The Economy of Roman Asia Minor, Microidentities in the Graeco-Roman World, Epiphanies in Greek Literature, Art and Culture, Galen, and Pagan Monotheism. In 2006 the department's postgraduates organized the annual national postgraduate conference in Classics and Ancient History, AMPAH. Research and conference travel by staff and postgraduates is generously supported, and the department has been successful in securing competitive bursaries and scholarships for post-graduate study, including AHRC, ORS and Exeter Research scholarships. |
