MA in Landscape ArchaeologyProgramme Director: Professor Stephen Rippon BA PhD FSA MIFA ILTMLandscape archaeology is a fascinating branch of the subject that spans the prehistoric and historic periods and involves the application of theories and methods from a diverse range of disciplines. Taught at leading centre for the study of archaeological landscapes and attracting students from a variety of backgrounds, the MA explores how the historic environment of today came into being. A key strength of the programme is that students work with a great range of sources and techniques, including field archaeology, palaeoenvironmental analysis, maps, documents and place-names, along with the techniques of historic landscape analysis that can bind these disparate sources together. Students can gain rewarding experience of professional practice as well as mastering the skills of desk-based research, and undertake a substantial piece of original scholarship in the form of the Dissertation. The MA has an established track record of preparing students for further doctoral research as well as a range of research and other careers. The course is directed by Professor Stephen Rippon and also taught by members of the Department such as Dr Oliver Creighton and Dr Howard Williams, as well as guest lecturers including Professor Mick Aston. Past students on the MA have an excellent record of gaining employment within professional archaeology, while others have gone onto doctoral research, several being recipients of AHRC studentships. The modules that make up this programme are listed in the programme structure section below. A distinctive strength of the MA in Landscape Archaeology at Exeter is the flexibility that it provides for students choose their own assignments, and the topic that they explore in the Professional Skills module. Students can, for example, choose to specialise in a particular period, or select assignments that focus on particular topics such as fieldwork techniques, the use of palaeoenvironmental material, the study of standing buildings, the use of maps and other documentary sources.
